Dr. Akwasi Afriyie Achampong, an acclaimed medical professional and the CEO of the International Maritime Hospital (IMaH), has been honored as one of the “100 Most Prominent and Influential People in Ghana” (MIPA) for 2023. This recognition, awarded by the Business Executive Group, highlights Dr. Achampong’s remarkable contributions to healthcare. The ceremony took place at the Marriot Hotel in Accra, where distinguished personalities gathered to celebrate the achievements of Ghana’s most impactful leaders.

Dr. Achampong’s leadership at IMaH has been transformative. Since assuming the role of CEO, he has implemented numerous initiatives that have fostered growth within the hospital and contributed significantly to Ghana’s healthcare sector. His visionary approach continues to inspire, leaving a lasting influence on health services across the nation.

At the awards ceremony, Dr. Achampong received a plaque and a citation that acknowledged his influence in enhancing Ghana’s health sector. The citation praised him for his role as a mentor and a creator of opportunities that enable countless Ghanaians to achieve their potential.

In addition to his place among Ghana’s top 100 influencers, Dr. Achampong was recognized with other prestigious awards in 2023, including “Best Performing CEO of the Year – Health” at the Ghana Leadership Awards and “Medical Superintendent of the Year” at the 9th Ghana National Medical Excellence Awards. These accolades further underscore his reputation as one of Ghana’s foremost medical leaders.

In 2022, Dr. Achampong was also inducted as an Associate Member of the Pharmaceutical Society of Ghana (PSGH) in recognition of his exceptional contributions to pharmacy education and practice in the country. Under his leadership, IMaH has become a central institution for pharmacy training and research, providing valuable opportunities for pharmacists to advance their skills and improve healthcare outcomes.

The “100 Most Influential Award” organized by the Business Executive Group seeks to honor individuals whose personal and professional achievements have positively influenced society. Notable figures alongside Dr. Achampong in this year’s lineup included the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Kingsford Sumana Bagbin; Professor Amin Alhassan, Director-General of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation; former Minister of State, Hon. Hackman Owusu Agyeman; and other prominent personalities from various sectors.

The International Maritime Hospital, under Dr. Achampong’s stewardship, has positioned itself as a leading institution for pharmacy education and healthcare. Located in Tema and operating under the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority, IMaH opened to the public in 2017. The hospital is open year-round and offers a range of specialized services, including a helipad facility, and has a 130-bed capacity. IMaH aims to be the premier Center of Excellence for specialized healthcare in West Africa.

Dr. Achampong is also the Founder and President of Baldwin University College, which is recognized as a leading institution for training Medical Laboratory Technologists and Pharmacy technicians in Ghana.
