International Maritime Hospital Observes World Glaucoma Day With Awareness Program

The International Maritime Hospital (IMaH) has marked World Glaucoma Day with an awareness program aimed at educating the public on the dangers of the disease and the importance of early detection. The event, themed “Uniting for a Glaucoma-Free World,” featured presentations on the underlying causes, symptoms, and effects of treatment or non-treatment of glaucoma.
Presentations highlighted how glaucoma damages the optic nerve due to increased intraocular pressure and how timely intervention can slow its progression. Experts also discussed available treatment options, including medication, laser therapy, and surgery, stressing that while glaucoma cannot be cured, it can be managed effectively if detected early.
Speaking at the event, Dr. Lauretta Opoku, an ophthalmologist at IMaH, explained that glaucoma is a leading cause of irreversible blindness, often developing without noticeable symptoms until significant vision loss occurs.
Additionally, medical representatives from Phillips Pharmaceuticals Ghana provided insights into Optilyf, an eye care supplement designed to protect the eyes and boost eye performance. They explained its benefits in supporting overall eye health and its role in complementing other glaucoma management strategies.
The awareness program reinforced the need for proactive eye care, with IMaH urging the public to take vision health seriously.
World Glaucoma Day is observed annually to increase awareness and encourage early diagnosis, with health institutions worldwide working to educate communities on the risks and management of the disease.
